Browsing through my make up drawer, I figured out that I have many similar products and I thought why not challenge them against each other. Obviously I have my favourites, but comparing them with other products, it would make their pros really stand out. Starting with eye primer.
So the first batch is obviously dedicated to the product you are supposed to apply first – and that’s the primer. And I say ‘supposed’ because I don’t always do it (guilty here). I personally don’t enjoy using primers and usually I just skip this step, but if you are a primer lover, then this post might be interesting for you.
Today I’m comparing two samples which I got from two different subscription boxes – The Balance Me Instant Lift Primer is from Birchbox and the Smash Box Photo Finish is from Marzia’s box. I used them a few times already and I can’t really pick a winner because they both have their pros and cons.
First there’s the smashbox primer and I don’t think there’s any who hasn’t heard of it. It’s an absolute best-seller, many other brands are creating dupes for it, everyone is raving about it.. you know what I’m talking about.
It has this silicone-like consistency which is very odd but makes your skin super pretty. It has no colour, no scent, it just sits nicely on top of your skin and make it silky.
The foundation also sits beautifully on the primer, everything wears okay throughout the day, but at the end my skin gets super oily.. like mirror shine oily! That’s the only thing I don’t like about it though!
Next there’s the balance me primer, it’s 99% natural and to be honest, I had my doubts before even trying it. I’ve had a balance me lip balm and I wasn’t fascinated, but still decided to give another chance to the brand.
First, it’s really difficult to squeeze it out of the tube – it’s like there’s nothing. However, the primer is white and creamy, quite sticky as well, and works more like a moisturizer. It doesn’t create that soft and silky canvas but grabs the foundation really nicely and doesn’t make my skin extra oily.
But here’s what bothers me the most: the smell – it’s like a really old perfume, something my grandma would wear. I’m not saying my grandma is not a stylish women, but the smell is really heavy and unpleasant (to me). It fades away after a while though, so it’s fine.
We don’t have a winner. Both are nice and both annoy me in different ways. I think I prefer the balance me primer for every day, and maybe smashbox one just from time to time.
Have you ever tried any of those and if not, what is your favourite primer?
